Interregional Seminar to Exchange and Discuss Best Practices in CRVS from Africa, Asia and the Pacific

An Inter-regional Seminar to Exchange and Discuss Best Practices in CRVS from Africa, Asia and the Pacific was organized on 2 and 3 June 2016 jointly by Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Experts from 4 Asian and 11 African countries, representatives of APAI-CRVS Regional Core Group Members (AUC, ASSD Secretariat, UNICEF, UNFPA, WHO, INDEPTH Network) and other development partners (CDC, Bloomberg) as well as international experts on CRVS attended the meeting.

The seminar was convened to identify common challenges in implementation of CRVS programmes in both regions and various strategies adopted by countries in their successful mitigation. Countries and experts shared their unique experiences in the following areas:

  • Improving accessibility of civil registration services, including accessibility to remote, hard-to-reach and nomadic populations
  • Creating demand for registration of all vital events and vital statistics from CR
  • Political commitment to improvement of CRVS systems and coordination among national stakeholders and development partners
  • Digitization of CRVS systems
  • Building capacity of national CR and VS officials
  • Monitoring of performance of the systems and registration completeness

The lively discussions held in a World Café format provided a great opportunity for all the participants to share experience and exchange the ideas, which resulted in valuable contributions on all the topics, collected and presented to the plenary on the second day of the seminar by the experts hosting the conversations.
